Get Your Garden Tidied For Free

A new scheme is offering the people of Anfield the chance to get their front gardens tidied up for free.

It’s aimed at residents who are socially isolated, old or disabled and is organised by PSS’s community health champions. The project will hold workshops where residents will get the chance to learn how to make bird tables and bird boxes to put in their spruced up gardens. The community health champions will also provide them with details on other local services and amenities that could help them. The Urban Green Team scheme is the result of funding from Liverpool Primary Care Trust Natural Choices award to help people make better use of green spaces.

“The look of the neighbourhood is a big issue among local people,” said Tom Murphy, from the PSS community health champions. “We find the most effective way to get messages across to local residents is to go in and tackle an issue that's a priority for them first. “While we're improving their gardens we can also encourage residents to get involved with other community activities and services that could help them.” The community health champions have prepared guides of very localised information on services in Anfield, down to where the nearest phone box is and what goes on in the local community centres.

The project is also offering volunteering opportunities to people who might have an interest in health or gardening and would like to help with the scheme. Each volunteer will complete a development programme including accredited health and safety and first aid training. Tom said: “It's a great way to gain experience and learn new skills that will improve their job prospects.
“People who come forward to help will have the status of PSS volunteers and get the training we provide.”

If you’d like your garden tidied up or would like to volunteer for the scheme, call Tom Murphy on 07595 863187 or email him at thomas.murphy@pss.org.uk, or visit the website - Health and Wellbeing Website.

Pilot social work project wins award

A groundbreaking social work team at PSS has won a key award.

PSS’s Social Work Practice team was a joint initiative with Liverpool City Council to improve outcomes for looked after children by working differently.

The project in Liverpool city centre has won a silver award in the prestigious Social Work Team of the Year awards. The pilot put social workers at the heart of all the decision making about the 120 children and young people in their care. They had autonomy when making decisions about placements but also on things such as budgets and recruiting staff. Administrative staff also reduced the paper work burden on social workers and freed them up to do more direct work with families.

Margaret Rowlands, PSS Children and Families Interim Head of Service, said: “This award is really deserved – this was an entirely new team working on a pilot project and they achieved so much.

“One of the key things we tried to do was create continuity of care for all the young people we were responsible for. This was difficult so we made sure the whole team, including project workers and admin staff, had knowledge of all our cases and were involved in practice issues. This meant that the young people, their carers and families felt comfortable to drop in for advice even when their allocated social worker wasn’t available.”

The 15 strong PSS SWP team consisted of 9 social workers, 2 project workers and 2 administrators, who are supported by the Team Manager and office manager. Financial pressures mean Liverpool City Council is not able to extend the project but the lessons learned are to be shared among others in the sector.

The PSS Social Work Practice that won silver in the prestigious Social Work Team of the Year awards.
